HERSILL organises a course on mechanical ventilation

in anaesthesia, in difficult clinical situations

Carlos III MADRID Health Institute

On November 7, 2008 HERSILL organized a training activity that aimed to review, deepen and update the principles in which mechanical ventilation is based in

anaesthesia in some specialties such as robotic surgery, thoracic and pediatric that sometimes are a challenge for anaesthesiologists, because of the difficulty involved.

Hand in hand with prestigious national experts, aspects such as the modes of controlled and assisted mechanical ventilation, respiratory mechanics and the application of mechanical ventilation

in the differentet clinical contexts already exposed were covered. Due to its characteristics, the course was aimed at all professionals who use mechanical ventilation in their daily practice.

The course, whose accreditation has been requested to the Community of Madrid, was presented by Dr. Benjamín Herranz, President of HERSILL and director of the course, Dr. Javier Ariño,

anaesthesia consultant in the Hospital Clínico San Carlos of Madrid.

The course consisted of two round-tables, one on ventilation itself with four  anaesthesiologists and the second was the presentation of the new anaesthesia machine  genesis®, manufactured

by HERSILL, suitable for use in these clinical situations and in which, in adittion to a technical presentation, simulations of the different ventilation modes were carried out.

              • El Dr. Ignacio Garutti, Head of Section of the Hospital Gregorio Marañón Madrid presented the paper on ventilation in anaesthesia in thoracic surgery.

Emphasized in the importance of protective ventilation and alveolar recruitment in the ventilated lung, as well as the importance of the role of CPAR

in the recovery of the collapsed lung.

              • El Dr. Javier Ariño, presented his experience in anaesthesia in robotic surgery, explaining the main complications of this type of surgery and how to

solve them, using different modes of ventilation, advanced respiratory monitoring and deep neuromuscular block.

              • El Dr. Luis Castro, anaesthesia and critical care consultant in the Hospital La Paz presented the main characteristics of pediatric anaesthesia with

respect to endotracheal tubes, techniques of ventilation and alveolar recruitment in this type of patients.

              • El Dr. Pascual Sanabria, Head of Section, anaesthesia and critical care in the Hospital La Paz presented in his paper the main causes and types of

pulmonary atelectasis as well as interesting clinical cases of pediatric patients with this pathology and how each case was particualary solved.

At the second round-table Mr. Carlos Martínez Jordán, Engineer in charge of R&D at HERSILL, presented the characteristics of the anaesthesia machine  genesis®. He emphasized the modular

character of the  genesis®and its advanced technology and ventilation modes.

To finish, Dr. Javier Ariño, using a patient simulator, demonstrated the different modes of ventilation of the  genesis®. He commented on aspects of his experience using  genesis® in robotic

surgery during the last 18 months in his hospital.
