On 22 May, we had the pleasure of participating in the 2nd Lean Healthcare Conference “Optimising processes, improving results”, organised by the Hospital Universitario Fundación de Alcorcón through its Kaizen Office. This event reaffirms the hospital’s willingness to be an active part of the cultural change that Lean methodology brings to healthcare organisations, thus driving the transformation of the sector.
The conference brought together national and international experts who shared presentations aimed at leading Lean cultural change in healthcare. As a novelty, practical workshops were held to turn ideas into concrete actions, encouraging a more active and applied participation. This meeting is designed to inspire change, promote operational excellence and consolidate the Lean culture in healthcare, essential pillars to optimise processes and improve results.
In this edition, our manager, Oscar M. Jordan, participated in the round table entitled “The origin. Lean in the healthcare industry: realities”. During his intervention, Oscar stressed that “quality is not a department: it is a way of thinking that starts on the shop floor. To improve, first you have to see. Go to the workshop, observe with your own eyes”. He also remarked that “we are not only looking to improve products, we are looking to improve people”, because “what is important is not only what we do, but how we do it and who does it”.
For us, continuous improvement is not a temporary project, but “a routine, a way of living our work”. We know that in order to move forward and generate real changes, it is essential to leave behind the mentality of “doing things because they have always been done that way”. This openness to change is key to building more efficient and sustainable processes.
Moreover, we are clear that “waste is not only material, it can also be information, time or even mismanaged talent”. Therefore, focusing on order and visual control – which are not just details but “the basis of an efficient culture” – allows us to identify this waste and act on it. But to really improve it is necessary to “go to the assembly floor, observe with your own eyes”, because quality is “inoculated in the day-to-day, not in a manual”.
Our commitment to quality is based on building manufacturing cells with people, not just machines. “We build a manufacturing cell with people, not machines,” Oscar emphasises, and this means understanding how they work, what difficulties they face and how we can make their lives easier, since “bureaucracy ends up killing improvement” if it is not managed with common sense.
At Hersill, since our beginnings in 1973, we have been committed to manufacturing in Spain with a firm commitment to developing reliable technology adapted to the real needs of patients. Our track record has enabled us to obtain international certifications and export to more than 100 countries, always maintaining a rigorous and humane approach to quality.
We believe that automation must be based on a deep understanding of people’s work. For this reason, the Lean culture we promote is aimed at creating environments where continuous improvement is a natural part of everyday life, and is integrated into all areas and levels of the organisation.
For us, quality is inseparable from how the work is done and by whom. This approach has enabled us to meet challenges, drive innovation and deliver solutions that bring tangible value to professionals and patients.
Participating in the 2nd Lean Healthcare Conference has reinforced our commitment to continuous improvement and excellence in healthcare management, key elements in moving towards a more efficient and sustainable healthcare system.
