At Hersill, we are convinced that technology and solidarity have the power to transform lives. That is why we are delighted to have been able to bring light and hope to the Lungi community in Sierra Leone through the donation and installation of a solar energy system at the Missionary Poor Clare Mission.
This project has been possible thanks to the collaboration with the ATABAL Foundation and, especially, with its director, Ms. Peligros Forjado Cordobés, to whom we would like to express our most sincere thanks for having entrusted us with this cause. We are honoured to have been able to contribute to this infrastructure, knowing that it has significantly improved the daily lives of many people.
Since the commissioning of the solar installation, we have witnessed the positive impact it has had on the mission. The electricity has not only allowed them to light their facilities, but has also enabled the water pump to operate, facilitating daily tasks and improving the services they offer to the community. We are thrilled to know that, thanks to this project, the mission now has electricity and water, allowing them to better serve those who come to their mission centre and to carry out their many activities with greater ease.
Lungi is a community with deep historical roots, inhabited mainly by Muslim fishermen. Since the arrival of the Xaverian Missionaries in 1950 and the subsequent work of the Poor Clare Missionaries since 2013, the mission has become a point of reference for welcome, dialogue and help for all. We are proud to have contributed to its development and sustainability.
Lungi Mission as a Centre of Hope
Thanks to this electrification, the mission continues to play a key role in the community, offering essential services. One of the most important aspects is inter-religious dialogue, which promotes understanding between Catholics and Muslims, strengthening the bonds of the community. In addition, the mission has established strong educational support, working with local schools to provide resources and learning opportunities for children.
In times of crisis, the mission is quick to act in humanitarian assistance, distributing essential resources to those most in need. Christian formation is also organised, through liturgical activities and catechesis, to foster spirituality and a sense of community.
The mission also offers recreational spaces for children, providing places where they can enjoy sport, music and the arts, which is vital for their all-round development. In the area of healthcare, the mission works closely with a clinic in Makeni, ensuring that the population receives quality medical care.
In addition, the mission promotes spirituality and formation through retreats and workshops that offer opportunities for personal and community growth. Finally, the mission provides shelter for missionaries and volunteers, providing a safe and comfortable place where they can rest and continue their work of service.
Seeing the changes this project has brought about motivates us to continue working on our mission to unite technology and solidarity. Knowing that they can now use computers, listen to music and, most importantly, are no longer afraid of the dark at night, reinforces our commitment to initiatives that truly transform people’s lives.
At Hersill, we will continue to be committed to social responsibility and support projects that improve living conditions in communities in need. Our heartfelt thanks to the ATABAL Foundation and the Poor Clare Missionaries for allowing us to be part of this beautiful work. May this light continue to shine in Lungi and in the hearts of all those who make these changes possible.
